History and background

Since 1972 the Omokoroa Community Church has played a central part in the community of Omokoroa. As a cooperating Parish the OCC has worked hard to encompass the theologies of the Anglican, Methodist and Presbyterian churches drawing on the similarities and celebrating the differences. Our mission statement “To live by faith, be known by love, and be a voice of hope” underlines the heart of being located in a small community, the need to minister and care for one another and to be a place of refuge and hope.

History of the Parish

With a history dating as far back as 1877 the Omokoroa Community Church truly began ministry in 1972 and from 1975 until 2002 the church was based in the local Settlers' Hall. A growing population and growing congregation led to the building of our own purpose-built facility in 2002 (the current church) closely followed by the Manse. The current location of the church has made it more a part of the community and is utilised by a number of groups from within the congregation as well as clubs not affiliated with the church.

The Church Buildings

The Omokoroa Community Church is situated midway along the peninsula across the road from the harbour and down the hill from the school. Opened in 2002, the church is reasonably modern and can comfortably accommodate 200 people in the auditorium. The auditorium boasts a full sound system including audio loop. The church also has a fully equipped commercial kitchen which is often used for catering purposes. There is also a large hall and a well-equipped office which is open five mornings a week. Most parish fellowship activities occur in the hall which also has a data projector and small sound system. The hall is used extensively by both parish and community groups.
